So I'm curious

What do YOU suppose the purpose of blogs are? I find I’m dissatisfied with a lot of blogs because when I go to them I feel like they’re feeding me info but not talking to me. Does that make sense? A lot of them are endless info dumps. Others want to preach at me. Others want to bitch at me. But few really seem to want to talk to me. I wonder why that is since in my mind blogs are for talking. Am I wrong in this? I mean I could be because Lord knows I don’t have all the answers or even one for that matter.

And I totally get the whole idea that a blog is what the individual blogger WANTS it to be, so I guess maybe I’m asking more of what blog readers prefer or expect when they go to blogs.

I think of all blogs, I hate the preachy ones the most and I don’t mean in a religious sense. I mean when a blogger harps about how everyone else is doing it wrong and so by default they must be doing it right. (Authors are so guilty of this) Maybe I’m too laid back but hey I say let everyone have the rope to either hang or not hang themselves.

On a completely unrelated note, Dude, it’s so not chilly today. I wanted chilly. I mean yes, it is cooler, but I don’t think the word Cold Front should be wasted on this sort of event. I think it should have been called “A somewhat cooler front” :shoot:

Eh well I’ve exhausted my pee brain for today and that’s all the deep thinking I shall do. I’ll probably need the rest of the afternoon to recover!

:fainting:

  1. Hi Maya
Great post! It’s something I’ve thought a lot about this year as I debate what details about my deployment in Iraq up in public forum. I use my personal blog to build my name recognition in anticipation of someday (please God) selling my books but also to share my experiences in the army and in Iraq with the wider civilian world. In regards to writing, I share a lot of the lessons I’m still learning in the hopes of giving someone assistance with all the questions and lessons learned I was too proud to ask or listen to. For the military stuff, I try to limit my posts to what would my brigade commander think if he read this? Would he be proud of the officer who wrote it or shamed. I haven’t been perfect but I hope I’ve balanced it, at least a little bit.
So stop on by! I’d love to see what you think of my out of the way site, both in the writing life and army life aspects.

  2. My blog’s for conversation, mainly. Longer bits than Twitter, but still about laundry and donuts and what I’m writing. :weee:

I have several blogs, each for different reasons. My MamaKitty729 blog is primarily a personal blog… basically an online journal. In it, I share what’s going on in my life, my thoughts on raising my daughter, my relationship with my boyfriend, work, school, what books I’m reading (and what I thought of them once I’m done), and information about the charity I volunteer for. It’s eclectic, but it’s mine. :)

My second blog is strictly a book blog. I just opened it, but I write about the books I’m excited to read, the authors I love, I re-post my book reviews there. It’s a forum for me to share my love of books.

You’re right when you say that blogs are what the author wants them to be. But a lot of people take blogging too seriously and suck the fun out of it. I think that blogs should be where you can be totally honest with yourself and the people who read (after all, it is a public forum, so you WILL have readers). You can express your thoughts, and see what everyone else thinks about the subject.

    I could be over-thinking this.

And the weather? I’m in Houston… I had class this morning, and found that I needed a jacket because it was so chilly (WOOHOO!) but by the time I got out of class (noon), it had warmed up a little. Boooo. :cursesign: Hopefully you’ll get your cold front weather & we’ll get to wear jackets for the *entire* day.

Hi Maya, my thoughts on this subject is different than others. I check out all of my favorite writers blogs daily, because I am intrested in what they have going on and their thoughts on the crap going on around us on a daily basis. I also am always looking for news on future releases and exerpts…lol. I expect to hear their views and also complaints on whatever problems they may have circulating around them. I can’t help them but sometimes people just need an avenue to vent..
Well I am so excited about the new release, I won all three the other day on RR@H and Fatin is supposed to be mailing the last soon and I am chomping at the bit to get it ..lol. Have a great day darlin and keep pluging away..lol.

I wonder sometimes, too, Maya. I love the interactive blogs, where authors chat w/ you, ask you Q’s, tell you about problems w/ characters, upcoming books, what books they’ve loved, etc. I’m not really into the this is what I’m doing today blogs.
