Reader Poll!

There have been some issues for some readers regarding formatting errors in Colters’ Lady. I’ve been digging into the matter, but I could really use your feedback if you’ve had or read a copy from Samhain Publishing and found formatting errors!

I’ve had several comments and emails from readers with regard to errors in the Kindle version of Colters’ Lady. I went and bought the ebook from Amazon for my Kindle and then I also uploaded my author copy in PRC format to my Kindle so I could look through it. Mine was completely clean. None of the 3/4 in lieu of an em dash and no other errors that I could discern.

This is baffling to me but then I wondered if it mattered what version of the Kindle or if for instance it was an iphone ap etc. So my question to you is this and I’d love blunt answers :)

If you regularly purchase Samhain titles, do you find formatting errors in all titles? Just some titles? Or none at all? Also, do you use the older version of Kindle? The newer one? Or do you use an iphone ap or some other method of reading the Kindle version such as Kindle for PC?

I’m looking for something that tells me this isn’t random and specific to one certain device or method of reading so that we can fix the problem. I’d love your feedback!

This probably won’t be any help to you but I’ve bought your ebooks through the barnes and noble website always. They have a free ereader and you can read books on your PC, Mac, Blackberry, or IPOD Touch or IPAD now too. I’ve never had any problems reading ebooks after downloading them from the bn.com site.

I also use nook and the Barnes & Noble website. I’d say on average I see atleast one 3/4 in each samhain book I read. I usually highlight them and bookmark it thinking someday I will report it to someone.

    Hi Maya,

I bought it from MBAM for mobipocket book and didn’t see any formatting errors. I have had trouble with Kindle a few times though. Just a random formatting error. I have the original Kindle, and when I downloaded one of Lisa Marie Rice’s book it was formatted completely wrong. It’s not common though. Hope this helps.

the only formatting error I have encountered so far is finding the following randomingly: 3/4

  4. I just read COLTERS’ LADY in epub on my BeBook Mini, having bought it from My Bookstore & More. And… it had the annoying 3/4 thing throughout the book. I ignored it as best I could but it did jolt me out of the story to wonder what it stood for.

As someone who has purchased way over 100 Samhain books from MB&M, I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve run into this issue in a Samhain title*. I really can’t say that I’ve ever run into a formatting error from Samhain/MB&M (the one time I thought I had, the problem turned out to be that my BeBook Mini doesn’t play well with .prc), so yeah, there is something rotten in the state of this book…?

*To be honest, I haven’t read them all on the BeBook Mini so maybe it’s not quite the truth to say that over 100 titles have been clear , but I can vouch for at least thirty of them that I can recall off the top of my head.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys. I hope it keeps coming in! I had originally thought this was just a Kindle issue, but I’m hearing via email, facebook and this blog that the error was reproduced in every other format as well.

It’s frustrating and you all have my apologies. I’m working to see if the issue can be corrected.

I bought Colters’ Lady for the Kindle app on the iPhone and the 3/4 showed up throughout.

  7. Renee says:

I buy from both Samhain and from Amazon and I have never had a problem with either version. I have the first version of the Kindle. I have Colter’s Lady but I haven’t read it yet.

  8. Lillie A. says:

I do not have a Kindle but I like Amazon’s freebies, so I have Kindle For PC. I just looked through all the freebies published by Samhain (including Understood) and there were no formatting errors in those.

    1. Lillie says:

I just noticed that you spell your name the same way as me!

  9. Lillie says:

I have not downloaded Colter’s Lady yet, but I have been downloading from Samhain/MBaM for years. There is a formatting difference when I download to my computer, as opposed to my Nook.

I have never had a problem on my computer, though (using both the direct download via Samhain/MBaM, and the Barnes and Noble e-reader).

But, if you ask whether it bothers me… meh. Not enough to stop reading e-books. Plus, I’m enough of a techie, that if I wanted to fix the formatting, I could. E-books are not new to me, so I am not having to adjust to the medium, as well as the format.

I don’t have a Kindle but I did order from Samhain for my Sony and it was clean…no issues at all. I’ve never had an issue with anything I’ve ordered from Sanhaim for my Sony.

  11. Midnight says:

I have never had any format problems and I buy my books from samhain publishing. I do not own a kindle I just save them in a file on my desktop.

  12. Meg says:

I orderd my book from amazon direct to my Kindle(first generation) and the 3/4’s were there. They didn’t lower my enjoyment of the book at all!!! Meg

  13. Elizabeth says:

I have a nook and was wondering if Colters’ Lady was going to be available on it. I cannot find it if it isnt I can place the ebook on a jump drive and order from samhain.

  14. Bonnie says:

I have the new global wireless kindle and my kindle copy of Colters’ Lady had the 3/4 error in places where there was supposed to be a dash. I’m guessing it’s some sort of font translation error for that particular symbol. BTW, I loved the story!

  15. Bonnie says:

Sorry, forgot to mention that I also saw the 3/4 error in the Kindle for PC version. Sometimes where there was supposed to be a dash or where there was supposed to be ending punctuation right before end quote marks.

  16. Kim says:

My only problem with the book was there was no preview of Callie’s book. ;) Can’t wait for it.

  17. Twila Ledford says:

I think it has to do with the format. I’ve purchased several Samhain ebooks in EPUB format and have found multiple formatting errors in over 30 ebooks but it’s random. Some have none while some others are so bad it’s distracting. I’ve purchased both PDB and epub to read on my Jetbook Lite and I primarily order from B&N or Fictionwise. I haven’t ordered this one yet but it’s on my Want list. Pdb does better for mine so I’m limited on who I buy from.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I bought Colter’s lady via Amazon for the Kindle app on my Ipod touch, and I also got the random 3/4 throughout the book.
    Thanks

I have the newest software version on my Kindle 2 and I have the formatting error in question. I have more than 200 Samhain books on my Kindle and there are occasionally formating errors but it doesn’t bother my enjoyment of the story. Honestly, I find formatting, editing and grammatical errors in almost every book I purchase these days. Sometimes I have to stop and think about what the author intended to say because the sentence as read made absolutely no sense. I have learned to shrug and not let it bother me.

I loved Colters’ Lady and am eagerly awaiting Callie’s story.

I have a first generation Kindle and I often have the formatting errors. They are pretty distracting, but for the most part I’ve learned to ignore them.

  21. Rebecca C says:

I got my copy of Colters Lady through Omnilit in Mobipocket form. It had some 3/4 in it. I have a second gen Kindle. I Can’t wait for Callies’ story!

  22. Laurie says:

My purchase was made through Amazon for Kindle. I experienced the “3/4” like so many others. Frankly though, it didn’t pull me out of the story and I truly didn’t find it to be that big of a deal.

I also have it downloaded on my Kindle for iPod, but haven’t read on it, all reading so far has been on the actual Kindle.

  23. Tina S. says:

I have seen this quite a bit with no rhyme or reason. I have seen it in books bought from Amazon, Samhain, Ellora’s cave, etc. I have had both versions of the Kindle and the iPad and seen it on all.

  24. Brandi says:

I did have the 3/4 on Kindle, but on the PC.. not the unit.

  25. Kathy K says:

I have a first generation Kindle and purchased Colters’ Lady from Amazon yesterday and my copy is perfectly clean. I buy ebooks from Samhain all the time and rarely have I noticed any formatting errors. Great book so far.

  26. Traci C says:

I downloaded to my Sony E-reader. I have not had any problems with the type of file they use. I regularly download from Sony’s book site, Ellora’s Cave and All Romance and have had no problems. Colter’s Lady was perfectly clean for me. Hope this helps!

  27. Dolores says:

I don’t have an actual Kindle but I use the Kindle app for the iphone and Kindle for the PC and the 3/4 showed several times using those two readers. Don’t remember there being a problem in any of the other ebooks I have gotten from Samhain.

  28. Kelly T says:

I have the new Kindle and I use the iPhone and computer apps. I notice the 3/4 thing all the time (not just in your books). I did see it in this one too on my Kindle, iPhone, and computers.

  29. Kris G says:

I just finished reading “Colters’ Lady”, Kindle version for iPhone but downloaded onto my iPod Touch. YES my edition contained the 3/4 marks/errors that have been mentioned. I’ve read over 75 books on my iPod Touch and this was the very first book that I have noticed the 3/4 entries. Weird. Maybe over half of those books were downloaded to the Kindle first, then transfered to my iPod, the rest were direct downloads to the iPod.

BTW…loved “Colters’ Lady” and can’t wait for Callie’s story.

  30. My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on various websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress content into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  31. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

  32. Hello there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

  33. Please let me know if you’re looking for a article author for your weblog. You have some really great posts and I feel I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d love to write some material for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send me an e-mail if interested. Thank you!
